Orthognathic Surgery Coordination · Morristown, NJ
Complex cases, handled completely.
Some bite and jaw issues require a combined orthodontic and surgical approach. We manage the orthodontic side, before, during, and after surgery, and coordinate directly with your surgical team. The surgery itself is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon we trust.

When is jaw surgery considered?
Most patients do not need jaw surgery. For cases where jaw position itself is the underlying issue, not just tooth position, surgery combined with orthodontics typically achieves what braces or aligners alone cannot.
Signs jaw surgery may be needed
· Severe underbite (lower jaw sticks out)
· Severe overbite (top teeth cover bottom completely)
· Open bite that cannot be closed with braces
· Facial asymmetry or jaw imbalance
· Sleep apnea related to jaw position
· Difficulty chewing or speaking
· Chronic jaw pain
Important note
At your consultation, we assess whether your bite issue is dental (tooth position) or skeletal (jaw position). Most patients are in the dental category and do not require surgery. We will tell you clearly which applies.
The surgical orthodontics process
Surgical orthodontics involves three phases. One orthodontist, Dr. Gonchar, manages your orthodontic care throughout. You are never handed off mid-treatment.
1
Pre-surgical orthodontics (12–18 months)
Braces align teeth within each jaw in preparation for surgery. Your bite may look temporarily worse during this phase, this is expected and normal.
2
Surgery
Performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon we coordinate with and trust. We do not perform surgery. Surgery typically takes 4–8 hours; overnight hospital stay is common. Most people return to work or school in 2–3 weeks.
3
Post-surgical refinement (6–12 months)
Final orthodontic finishing after your jaw heals. Braces refined to perfect your bite. Total treatment arc: 2–3 years.

Jaw surgery corrects jaw position, which can improve facial balance and profile. We show predicted results using 3D imaging before any decisions are made.
Braces or Invisalign can improve tooth alignment, but cannot reposition the jaw itself. The doctor will discuss what is achievable with and without surgery so you can make an informed decision.
